White Star Reign Supreme
White Star have recorded yet another Senior Shield title as they accounted for Westport in the 2011 grand final. Played in wet and blustery conditions, White Star used the conditions to their advantage in the first half as they ranout to a 16-3 halftimelead with the wind at their backs. It was the Westport side who started stronger howeverbut they were unable thescore any points with their sustained pressure. Little mistakes made it easy for White Star to clear the line and with the strong wind at their backs, they were able to clear with plenty of distance. When White Star eventually got their hands on the ball in good field position they were able to create enough pressure on the Westport side to post points either through penalties to Tema Faifua or tries to both Alex Powell and Warwick Knox.
Turning at the break, Westport really needed to be the first team to score in order to get back in the match however this was not the case as White Star winger Sam Marris crossed to extend the lead to 21-3. From here on in Westport attacked the White Star line for the final 30 minutes with the almost gale force like wind at their backs. Eventually Neil Hateley managed to breach the rock-solid White Star defence to close the gap to 21-8. It was too little too late however as Westport found it too hard to stretch the defence of the impressive White Star side.
Final Score White Star 21 - 8 Westport
